What is kundalini yoga? We get a lot of questions about the different styles of yoga that are offered on our site. We have pages devoted to each style such as slow flow, vinyasa and kundalini to give you more clarity. Kundalini yoga classes have been growing in popularity for the last few years. At Buddhi Yoga, our studio in La Jolla, CA, our resident kundalini expert Sheel has become one of our most popular teachers. Her teaching style has created an even larger sense of community and have brought people closer together in a whole new way. But what is it and why exactly should we practice this strangely intense style of yoga?
Kundalini yoga and meditation integrates all the facets of yogic science: movement, breathwork, meditation, and mantra. The purpose of Kundalini yoga is to ignite the nerve center of the Soul Body and draw the True Identity of the practitioner up the spine, out of the crown chakra and into their daily lives. People often feel energized and joyful with a heightened awareness of their senses after class.
Why Are Kundalini Yoga Classes So Amazing?
Learn Powerful Breath-work
Kundalini will introduce you to powerful breathing exercises such as breath of fire. For some it can be difficult to master at first, but with practice you will get the hang of it. It is a rapid and bouncy breath through the nose that builds lung capacity and increases vital strength. It stimulates the solar plexus to release natural energy throughout the body and is incredibly uplifting and energizing. If you feel dizzy, this usually means you are not inhaling enough or hyper-ventilating. The inhale should be emphasized just as much as the exhale. Breath of fire is just one of many breathing exercises you will learn in kundalini yoga classes. Mastering the breath allows us to remain calm in even the most stressful situations. It is through this attention that we come closer to finding our true identity and fulfilling our destiny in this incarnation.
Chanting is Medicine
Chanting can be intimidating to many people. “You want me to sing?!” Yes we do! We understand the apprehension that you may feel. With our online kundalini yoga classes you can chant at the top of your lungs all by yourself in the privacy of your own home. This is a great way to get more comfortable with it before you move to a group setting. Chanting cleans and clears our subconscious, and the Mantra creates a vortex that pulls out the energy of the subconscious that is no longer useful. Our voice is a powerful tool that we use all day without much conscious thought. Intentionally using the vibration of our voice to clear out anything that is holding us back is a truly blissful experience. Chanting will leave you in a calm and euphoric state, spilling love out of the heart and onto those around you.
Kundalini Yoga Classes Help You Master the Mind
Kundalini yoga is much different than slow flow or vinyasa classes. The movements and breathing exercises are all recipes, or kriyas. There are specific things to be done for specific amounts of time. You may find yourself holding your arms up in an extremely uncomfortable position for 3,11, 22 or even 31 minutes. The mind will say things like “oh my gosh I can’t do this anymore,” and “why am I even doing this, this is so weird and crazy,” or “these people are nuts get me out of here my arms are going to fall off.” These are just some of the thoughts many that may run through your head, I know they did through mine! There is value in maintaining the pose through pain (as long as there is no injury) in order to come out the other side. You pushed through the intense desire to quit. It’s hard to verbalize why this is powerful until you try it for yourself. The willingness to keep going will bring you joy and understanding in a way that is hard to find in any other type of yoga class.
