Doing online yoga classes is not easy. It takes a certain type of personality to naturally have the will and discipline to motivate yourself at home alone. There’s no motivation quite like a room full of other students working hard together. Use this guide to reshape how you think and apply the tips listed below to keep your home yoga routine alive and thriving.
Create the Perfect Space for Your Online Yoga Classes
Even if you don’t have a big space to work with at home, all you need is enough room for a yoga mat. The key is to make your space special. We like to have some plants nearby, a candle and a pillow. The candle can serve as a drishti (focal point) when you practice and the pillow is great to use during savasana or to cushion your knees in lunges or other similar poses. Having your favorite essential oil is also a nice touch to begin and end your practice.
Put It In Your Calendar As If It Were an Important Meeting
Set aside your designated practice time and treat it as if it were an important meeting you can’t miss. Putting your practice periods in your calendar and working the rest of your schedule around it increases your chances of actually doing it. We suggest practicing first thing in the morning. The reason for this is that we’re all busy, and if we wait until later in the day, it’s much easier to push it aside for something else that comes up. It’s also nice to practice before everyone else wakes up, when all is quiet and peaceful. Get it done first thing in the morning and then you won’t have to worry about it anymore.
Think About How Good You’ll Feel After Doing the Online Yoga Classes
There’s no better feeling than the one you get right after finishing a yoga class. We all feel lighter, less stressed, elongated, stretched out and calm. Doing yoga is a great stress reliever and the benefits exceed just the physical ones. When we do yoga we let go of anger, shift our perspective and even become more creative. If you’re in the middle of debating whether to do a class or not, just think about the feeling you get when you come out of savasana. It’s a blissful feeling that stays with you for the rest of the day.
Grab a Yoga Buddy
Invite your lover, child or friend to practice with you. There are many studies that tell us about the effectiveness of doing yoga or working out with a partner. It doesn’t matter if they actually do the whole class with you as long as you’ve got some moral support. Have fun with it, don’t take it too seriously, and enjoy the company while you breathe, move and laugh together.
Choose Shorter Classes for Your Home Practice
Doing a 75-minute class at home can be tough, especially if you’re not used to practicing for that long. This is why we have 20, 40 and 60-minute options in addition to the 75-minute classes. Doing twenty minutes is better than doing nothing at all, so try some of the titles below and stop making excuses! Your body and mind will thank you.
